A blocked toilet is an unwelcome but extremely common occurrence in a household, and unblocking it can be an unpleasant job. There are many reasons a toilet can become blocked – as an example, items that aren’t biodegradable, such as ladies toiletries and un-flushable wet wipes, can clog up your system and prevent it from functioning properly. This handy guide will teach you how to unblock a toilet and also teach you how to avoid such messy incidences in the future!

Grab a Pair of Rubber Gloves and Get Stuck In

The toilet is an unsanitary area, so it’s important to use gloves to ensure you are protected from any lingering germs. If you are able to see the blockage, put on a well-fitting pair of gloves and remove whatever is preventing the water from draining.

Hot Water and Dish Soap

If the blockage can’t be fixed by pulling out whatever it is that’s stuck in the pipes, add a little dish soap into the toilet bowl, then add half a bucket of hot water. Pour the water into the bowl from waist level – this is so it causes enough pressure to clear the clog. Leave the hot water in the toilet for a few minutes to give it time to loosen the blockage.

Plunger Method

When using a plunger to unblock a clogged toilet, it is important to use one that has a ball shaped suction cup, or one with a fold out rim to ensure that it can make a tight seal. To create a tighter seal, the plunger needs to become softer and more flexible, which can be achieved by running the plunger under hot water. Place the plunger into the toilet basin and push down slowly but firmly, making sure that the hole is completely covered. To create a strong suction in the drain, pull up on the plunger quickly and then push in to create pressure. Repeat this motion until the blockage is clear.

Wire Coat Hanger

If the blockage is a particularly stubborn one, another useful trick is to use a wire coat hanger. Untwist the coat hanger and then tie a small rag onto one end so as not to damage the porcelain. Guide the hanger into the drain until it reaches the clog, then twist, push and pull. Manoeuvre the wire hanger in a circular motion – this should loosen the blockage and allow the water to move freely through the drain.

How to Avoid a Blockage

To help you avoid this problem in the future, NEVER flush any of the following items down the toilet:
Food Fat
Cotton Buds
Tampons
Condoms
Wet Wipes (Unless stated otherwise on the pack)
Nappies
Small Pets

In our experience, these items are the major cause of blocked toilets and drains in London. By disposing of them responsibly, you can keep your plumbing system in great condition and help to avoid blockages of any kind.
