Flash floods in Manchester cause travel chaos

When the MET office issued a severe weather warning for Greater Manchester last week, most of the town’s residents paid little notice. There are many jokes about the amount of rainfall Manchester sees, but perhaps residents should have listened a little more carefully to the latest advice.

Severe rain storms hit the city last Thursday with many parts hit by localised flooding. Stockport and Cheadle Hulme were the hardest hit, with a flood warning put in place in the River Bollin catchment area. Other areas hit included Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Knutsford and Hale.

Part of the M60 motorway was also affected when a slip road had to be closed at junction 17. The depth of water that accumulated at Bramhall train station made the road impassable with only the foolhardy attempting to drive their cars through the ‘lake’. A similar seen was seen in Cheadle where two feet of water sat under the bridge at the station causing severe delays in the area.

Flash flooding is comparatively rare in the UK, but it does happen so the drainage systems need to be up to the job of taking all the excess water away. If the drainage system from your house is not working correctly and cannot successfully take away the water from your roof when an event like the recent flash floods in Manchester happens, the water will accumulate, which could cause serious damage and result in you having to make a claim on your household insurance to pay for repairs.
