Sewer upgrade works have started in a small village in Furness this week. The works are being undertaken by United Utilities in Rampside, and when complete should reduce the risk of flooding because the sewer system will be able to cope with more storm water at times of heavy rainfall.
The three month scheme will see an underground chamber built, which will hold storm water until it is pumped to Barrow sewage treatment works when the heavy rain subsides.
The project manager on the job, Paul Romanko stated on the United Utilities website:
“Sewer outfalls are an essential part of any sewer system because they help prevent flooding in times of very high rainfall.
“This one at Rampside has done its job well but it does not conform to new standards which will come into force in the next couple of years.
“Our work will help improve the environment of this part of Morecambe Bay, which is a protected European Marine Site and a UK Special Site of Scientific Interest. It will also be much nicer for residents and visitors.
“It’s all part of our £3.6bn investment programme across the North West at the moment.”
