Thames Water has closed a road in Thatcham while they carry out emergency sewer repairs. The road, Park Lane, has been closed for a week and is expected to reopen tomorrow, weather permitting. The sewer collapsed under the road at the end of last week when cracks appeared in the road surface to the astonishment of passersby.

A diversion is currently in place for motorists while the repairs take place. The road is closed totally to traffic between Sagecroft Road and Floral Way.

A Thames Water spokeswoman stated:

“We are carrying out emergency work to fix a broken sewer, which is causing a depression in the road.
“Unfortunately due to the depth of the sewer, we’ve had to close the road while we do the work.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing and assure people we are working as quickly as possible.”

London drainage problems

There are many problems that can cause a sewer to collapse. And pressure from the road above is just one of these reasons; other reasons include poor maintenance or lack of regular cleaning. If you are concerned that the drain that leads the waste water away from your home may be in a poor state of repair, it’s always a good idea to contact a drain cleaning company in London so they can check its current condition.
