Identifying The Root Cause of Your Drain Issues
Drain blockages are one of the most common issues we are called out for, but they can often be prevented.
As one of the largest providers of drain jetting in London, we have our fair share of experience dealing with blocked drains. We’ve listed the top five causes of drain blockages that we have seen over the years, giving you all the knowledge you need to protect your drains from any costly blockages.
Hair
One of the most common causes of blocked drains is hair. Although it seems hard to see how just a few strands of hair could cause a significant issue, over time they can build up. Once a blockage forms, your drains can be severely impacted. We recommend placing guards over your plug holes, and checking to see if there is any build-up of hair in and around them.
Cooking fat
Many of us are guilty of pouring cooking oil, fat or grease down the drain. However, these kinds of substances are very sticky, and they will immediately cling to the sides of your drains. If you keep on pouring them down the drain, this will build up more and more, leading to a blockage. The solution? Put them in the bin instead!
Soap
A lot of people don’t realise that soap can lead to blocked drains. The soap isn’t so much an issue on its own, but it can bind to other materials in your drain, acting as a glue. With people washing their hands more than ever right now, this will be quite a concern. We recommend that you use bars of soap rather than liquid ones, as you use much less with each application.
Leaves
So far, we’ve mentioned things that you find inside the home – so let’s head outdoors for a moment. Leaves are one of the leading causes of drain blockages, and in the autumn months when they fall from the trees, we see a real rise in the number of issues. Make sure to remove any leaves that have collected around a drain, and invest in a cover to keep as many out as possible.
Wet wipes
Last but not least are wet wipes. Makeup and baby wipes are some of the most common materials found in drains, and in London they are used to such an extent that they have been known to accumulate in ‘fatbergs’ along with other materials. Unlike toilet paper, these do not break down. So if you use them regularly, pop them in the bin to prevent any blockages.
We’re here to help
If you do have a blockage, then we are here to help. We work with a variety of clients all over London, and we have extensive experience unblocking drains with jetting. Once we have successfully removed a blockage, we will work with the client to prevent the problem reoccurring. We’ll inform them what materials are safe to put down a drain. These are known as the three P’s: paper, pee and poo. Anything else should be put in the bin!
