Sewer systems in Skirwith, Winskill and Langwathby are to be overhauled by United Utilities as part of a huge investment.

The new waste water scheme will see waste water treated before it enters the River Eden and will remove outfall pipes on the Briggle Beck. The cost of the upgrade is expected to hit £6.7m, but will boost the environment of the region as a whole.

The chief executive of United Utilities, Steve Mogford, stated:

“This project near Penrith is an excellent example of the very real benefit our record £3.6bn investment is bringing to people and the environment across the North West.

“Our treatment works around Langwathby have always done a good job in providing an essential service for their local communities and this project will ensure they continue to meet higher environmental standards which benefit the surrounding countryside.”

The sewage works at Langwathby will be upgraded as part of the scheme, with a new pipeline from Skirwith and Winskill to be installed. The project manager, Simon Povey, further explained:

“Briggle Beck is a Special Area of Conservation and a tributary of the River Eden. So even during construction work we will be taking special care. Work in the beck and river will take place in the summer to make sure we don’t affect the all-important spawning season for fish.”
