What not to flush down the drain

If you follow a few simple rules, you can reduce the likelihood that your drain will become blocked. Blocked smelly drains are commonly caused by putting the wrong things down your sink or toilet. But if you know what it allowed and what isn’t allowed, you should be able to avoid blockage problems easily.

Blocked drainage can be really stressful. When a drain becomes blocked, it can be really difficult to shift the blockage and hence waste water and other waste matter can overflow into your home. By following a few rules about the things that you can and can’t put down your drains, you should be able to avoid most drainage problems.

• Never pour cooking fats down your drains, the fats can solidify and are the most common cause of drain blockages.
• Don’t flush nappies or sanitary towels down the toilet as these can easily block the system.
• Don’t scrape food scraps down the drain. Scrape them into the bin.
• Pour hot water down the plug of your bath and sink on a regular basis to keep things flowing.
• Use a hair catcher on bathtub plug holes to stop hair clogging the drain.

By following these simple rules, you should be able to stop most common drain blockages before they can pose a problem.
