Common causes of blocked drains

Many properties suffer with a blocked drain at some point or another, although as blockages can often be difficult to spot, you shouldn’t solely rely on spotting obvious problems, and you should also make the effort to take preventative measures.

There are several preventative measures which you can take, some of which are covered below:

- Ensure that debris from the garden- such as leaves, twigs and general rubbish- is cleared away on a regular basis.

- Don’t throw food down the drain! However keen you may be to tackle the washing up, make sure that you scrape every last crumb of food into the bin, as food, fat and cooking oil are all major causes of blockages. Investing in a sink strainer is a very wise idea.

- Don’t flush sanitary items, nappies or thick kitchen roll down the toilet, as these could see you faced with a blockage extremely quickly.

Even though the majority of people are aware that the above can cause issues, even a little carelessness could cause a huge (and not to mention expensive) problem.

In the event of a blocked drain though, you will have to call for help from a professional drain maintenance company, who may utilise a number of procedures, including jetting, root removal and de- scaling to rectify the problem.
